Our video spotlights experiences of IN LSAMP Scholars as they engage with professionals and other students. Indiana STEM LSAMP is built on three pillars of student development (academic integration, social integration and professionalization). We strive to create a community that supports student connections with other LSAMP alumni, scholars and faculty mentors. These connections improve retention within STEM majors, internship and career opportunities and introduces students to environments with STEM careers are thriving.

Wow! I am so excited to share this video with my own students at the majority-minority urban commuter university where I teach chemistry. From learning about the hopes and dreams of so many of these amazing people, I can tell that this video will lift them up and inspire them to new heights. Thank you for the dedication you put into making this. What I most loved in the video is Ms. Elyse Thompson's comment at the very end - it's not only for her, but also for those who will follow along the same lines. Every person matters.

Hello Overtoun, Thank you for watching our video and commenting. The students are selected through an online application process. Students submit short essay responses to three questions alongside several short questions to determine STEM interest and their research area of interest. These applications are reviewed with campus coordinators and faculty mentors who have served in the program to identify the best matches for their available positions. Students are notified in mid to late March to either interview with their potential faculty mentor and complete additional hiring paperwork.

I also teach a summer bridge course at IUPUI so was excited to see you noted your Cal-Bridge program. The ePortfolio is a wonderful tool and is free for students to join and use. Hello Jeanne, Thank you for watching our video and commenting. Our students have pursued many areas after degree; corporate, MS programs in Engineering and STEM education, PhD programs in Geoscience and Chemistry, and pre-professional programs such as dentistry and medicine. We've worked with students from community college through their application to graduate school. The ability to explore different paths and talk to professionals from all across the career continuum has helped many decide which route fits them best at graduation. We recruit faculty mentors from within the campus of each program (and community partners surrounding the campus). Faculty mentors manage the research project of the student so they must be well versed in research and have experience working with undergraduate students, as well as a passion for mentoring.

Like Hannah and Alexander, I also enjoyed following one scholar through the video and hearing how meaningful the experience was for her and those who will follow in her footsteps. I was impressed by Ms.Thompson's emphasis on the support that she felt and the importance of the community connections. Once they graduate, do the scholars have the ability to maintain a connection to the IN LSAMP community? For example, does the program facilitate an alumni network?

Hi Sasha, Thank you for watching the video and sharing your feedback. Our IN LSAMP scholars build a connection with our IN LSAMP community and the broader LSAMP alliance. We established a LinkedIn group where the scholars join during their research experience. The alumni remain in the group after graduation and we are fortunate to have them share back stories of career successes, provide support for students with questions about the journey, and sharing job opportunities with students. It has been a great network where the alumni are able to give back and inspire students. The LSAMP alumni have been invited to the social hours we hold where scholars can talk about a variety of topics. Lately it has been the interest in virtual interviewing. We were fortunate to have several who had been through Zoom interviews and able to provide advice.

Thank you for visiting and watching our video. Our NSF project, IN LSAMP (Indiana STEM Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation). Our mission is to increase the quality and quantity of students from underrepresented minority populations receiving BS degrees in STEM. To accomplish this, 1) we promote student success by engaging students early in their academic career with undergraduate research, 2) build a community of faculty mentors at our campuses, 3) design professional development activities for students, and 4) support academic persistence through graduation with our network of peer mentors and tutors.
Our focus – strengthening academic prep; increasing engagement with STEM discipline; retaining students in STEM majors; transitioning students from 2 to 4-year institutions and preparing students to be STEM professionals ready for either graduate program or career.
For researchers and educators: What ways are you evaluating the success of underrepresented minorities in your STEM classrooms and laboratories? Can you share any training or professional development you received on supporting minority faculty and students in STEM (either campus or in STEM community)?
For administrators and support staff: What are some programs or activities you have used to build a community of support for underrepresented minority students and faculty in STEM at your campus?

Empowering video for young women. As a graduate student I was on the external evaluation team for LSAMP program at Oklahoma State University. It was great hearing a students perspective of another LSAMP program.
