This initiative was possible thanks to the join effort of different NSF and NASA funded research and education programs at the University of Puerto Rico. The programs PRSPRINT, CAWT, CIRE2N, PRLASMP, and NASA-PRSGC, joined forces to provide opportunities, activities, and tools for the new generation of Latin women to continue careers in STEAM disciplines The activities were designed with the collaboration of undergraduate and graduate students from the Faculties of Natural Sciences, Humanities and Art. Join us in our effort to increase women's participation in STEAM!

Excelente video sobre la iniciativa que están tomando nuestras científicas puertorriqueñas. Yo fui al Congreso. Realmente muestra todo el talento de estas mujeres científicas de nuestro país en diferentes disciplinas y gama de trabajos aquí, en Estados Unidos y en otros países. Muchas felicidades y sigan esforzándose como han hecho hasta ahora.

Excelente video, gracias por hacer visible la labor de la mujer en la ciencia y por inspirar a las nuevas generaciones de mujeres. No hay límites. Las posibilidades para nuestras niñas son infinitas.

Imagine for a moment, your grandmothers or great-grandmothers as scientists. Surely you can relate them with richer and diverse science perspectives to contribute to the scientific development. Looking back, you will notice how many of our foremothers were dedicated solely to the home. Nowadays, we know this loss of talent has denied the world of their exceptional ideas and capacities.

Today we have demonstrated those exceptional capacities and are working tirelessly to get more women's ideas heard and to achieve a more equitable society. This video shows the initiatives carried out by various programs at the University of Puerto Rico. From educational community activities, events, and videos to the elaboration of a book. All designed to highlight the role of Latin women in STEAM and motivate girls and young women to pursue scientific careers. Keep up this good work!

Fantastico!  I am impressed with the multi-agency & cross discipline collaboration.  Is this something you plan to do every year?  Did you invite middle and high school girls to attend?  Did you include their families?  Were the TED talks recorded?  Are there cultural barriers and/or discrimination in PR for women in STEM fields?  I hope your book is published and distributed widely.  

Wow, what an awesome video. Learning about all the work that your team is doing is really inspiring. The advice to not give into doubts or stereotypes that may limit potential was a great reminder. Keep up the great work, there are many others who will benefit from your inspiration.

The Guidebook is designed to help institutions explore the challenges and strengths they have in recruiting, hiring, and retaining a diverse STEM faculty. It provides: (1) A summary of the scholarship and practice-based insights leveraged to develop the model for increasing faculty diversity & an institutional self-assessment template; (2) Instructions on how to complete the institutional self-assessment; and, (3) practical guidance for campuses as they develop action plans for advancing faculty diversity.

This is a great asset to the young women in Puerto Rico and across the world. I am a committee member for SAGE STEAM Camp http://bit.ly/2z21gcT It is a week long summer camp for rising 7th grade girls that is geared to exposing them to career possibilities in STEAM.

This initiative has meant a lot to me and has contributed to my personal and professional growth. Meeting enterprising women, women who have contributed so much to science and who have overcome all kinds of stereotypes has been inspirational. This project has influenced my life and my career because it has helped me to believe more in myself, in my potential and abilities and to confirm once again that, in these disciplines, my contribution is important.

Science has given me a voice! And that is the most beautiful and important thing of this initiative: It gives us an opportunity to express us, to transmit our knowledge in different scenarios and to be part of a community that promote the participation of all in STEAM.

What a wonderful initiative to support women in Puerto Rico. I particularly appreciate that the efforts are being led from educational leadership within Puerto Rico, rather than from an outside institution. Can you share a little about what the mentorship training for role models entails. What are some of the challenges and best practices around role models that are emerging from this work? 

I recently joined this initiative and, in just a few months, I’ve been able to do so much more than i expected towards its purpose. Being involved in the symposium’s preparation and execution was a fun and enriching experience and I am grateful to have been a part of it.

Fantastic Program. So nice to see the "A" in Steam added.  Looking forward to the book - is there a link for us? Will this program continue?

Amazing to see women in science showcased for all to see! As part of the team that helped with the initiative I can attest to the success of it, and how powerful it was to see countless women scientist inspiring young women to follow in their footsteps.

Me uno a tus palabras, esta iniciativa ha sido de mucho crecimiento para todas. Y, sin duda alguna, nos ha abierto las puertas para descubrir nuevas oportunidades.

 The aim of our initiative is to encourage girls and women to look beyond the lab coats and to see the possibilities for careers in STEAM.  The participants had the opportunity to listen to role models that told inspiring anecdotes of their journeys in science, their challenges, and their triumphs, and answered questions from the audience, including some thought-provoking questions from our girls and young women. 

In addition, the participants rotated through several activities on the day. One of the activities that was a highlight for the students was the Science Expo, where they participated in fun and hands on demonstrations presented by the university student’s associations and nonprofit organizations. In the Science expo they were exposed to the many ways we encounter science in our everyday lives and practiced their problem-solving skills to work towards solutions. In the afternoon participants received orientation about research opportunities and the different STEAM academic programs.

 This initiative not only provided a space for young women to interact with role models, it also provided  our undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to  use their talents to deliver an empowering message to the next generation, and learn about the importance of using our knowledge to the service of society. Also, it was an opportunity to improve their communication skills, raise their voice for better opportunities and even explore new career options.

Excelente video, mis estudiantes quedaron impactadas de poder conocer a tantas cientificas y entrevistarlas. Esta iniciativa es muy importante para los jovenes ya que les permite identificar posibles areas de estudios en sus carreras. Entre los testimonios de mis estudiantes, esta actividad les ayudo a conocer carreras y oportunidades que tienen las mujeres en las ciencias. Ademas las inspiro a buscar mas informacion para su preparacion hacia la universidad.

 Excelente! Estuve presente en la actividad y compartir con mujeres latinas exitosas en su area de STEAM fue una inspiración para muchos.

Thank you for this video and this initiative in helping introduce more women into the STEAM field. It is important for young women to see that there are in fact many successful women in STEAM and that they can achieve anything they set their minds to just as they did. As a Latina who majored in the STEM field, I understand the importance and benefits of seeing people that look like you being successful in their area of study, so thank you once again for your efforts, because we can always benefit from seeing more Latinas in science! Thank you for these projects to allow young women to see themselves as scientists, by seeing others like themselves actively pursuing their interests and dreams. When people stop envisioning scientists solely as a white male in a lab coat, a virtual door opens that may even welcome them in. Great video.

Very nice work!  Coming from the geoscience community (which has a dismal record on matters of diversity, equity and inclusion), I would appreciate your team pointing interested participants toward continued study in geoscience fields that are critical to Puerto Rico, including coastal management, hydrogeology, geohazards, geochemistry.  Thanks for your empowering efforts.
